Great Painter: Kai Samuels-Davis

By Cate on January 24, 2012 in Art, Great Painters

I’m so into this painter. His work is available for purchase on Etsy in the Windy Lane Studio store. Kai’s paintings are understated, painterly, and very reminiscent of the late great Lucian Freud. I also adore seeing the studio within which he works; globs of oil strokes line the wall. Inspiration all around. Buy his work! It’s sure to add a touch of sophistication to your space.

In the Bedroom, Keep it White

By Cate on January 23, 2012 in Charlottesville

I’ve always gone all white in the bedroom really because I don’t know what else to do. But the look works, especially if you’re trying to create a somewhat peaceful abode. Here are some white rooms I enjoy, that are even more tranquil than my messes.

What colors do you like in the bedroom?

A Belated Happy New Year to You

By Cate on January 10, 2012 in Food & Drink, Home

On New Years Eve we were lucky enough to be up north at my grandparents beach house on Long Island. We set the table accordingly with a collection of white coral, sand dollars, lemons and succulents. The dinner: blueberry pancakes, bacon and champagne.

Happy (Belated) New Year! How did you celebrate?

Deck the Halls 2011

By Cate on December 21, 2011 in Home

I stuck with all green and white this year, and got really into branches. Our little tree is decorated mostly with postcards and plastic pears.

How did you decorate for Christmas?

Big Sale at the Great Gifts Holiday Market

By Stephanie on December 19, 2011 in Charlottesville, Culture, DIY, Events

Just in case you’re still doing a bit of Holiday shopping: The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative is hosting the 2nd Annual Great Gifts Holiday Market at 209 Monticello Rd (across from Spudnuts).  The market features a collection of artisan goods from Charlottesville and the surrounding region. The gallery is filled with a mix of hand-made t-shirts, quilts, jewelry, ceramics, screen prints, illustrations, ornaments, stationary, toys, journals, and a creative mix of odds-and-ends.

THIS Wednesday, December 21st, there will be a special 15% Xmas Procrastinator’s SALE from 5-10pm on everything in the store.

Light snacks will be provided by The Farm, as well as musical entertainment from people recording The Bridge’s Christmas Album in the small gallery. If you have a Xmas song or story that you would like to record for the album, feel free to stop by on Wednesday or any other day in December to contribute. A handful of local musicians are participating, including Phillip St. Hour, Devon Sproule and Paul Curreri, Chris Campanelli, Guion Pratt, Bill Wylie, Jesse Dukes, and more!

Local Inspiration: The Home of Christy Ford

By Cate on December 15, 2011 in Charlottesville, Home

Today, the Washington Post has a great feature on my absolute favorite house in Charlottesville, owned by Christy Ford of And George. The images speak for themselves, really. Talk about whimsy! I love everything: the boxwood, the cumquats, the touches of aqua, and, of course, the amazing bust decorated with shells. Do read the article, but here’s a sneak peek.

Street Style: The Chic Librarian Look

By Cate on December 12, 2011 in Street Style

The way she effortlessly puts together the wool tights, hot oxford heals, and antique leather book bag makes the whole sexy librarian thing look so chic, right? Shoes are from Ike’s.

Pasta, Pills and Chocolate Shakes

By Stephanie on December 8, 2011 in Charlottesville

It goes without saying that it has been a long time since I’ve posted on The Charlotte. Where did I go? There is a good explanation for it.

I am a little over two and half months pregnant. Yeah! We are excited about this. The reality, though, is that I’ve been experiencing debilitating pregnancy nausea and vomiting (NVP) for a little over 5 weeks. The misnomer “morning sickness” is almost laughable to me (almost. I’m not really at the point where this is all a funny story…hopefully one day soon). I know that pregnancy is different for everyone. I am one of the few that got hit hard by the NVP. Celia did a much better job of describing what it is like. Her words were my words almost exactly.

More good news is that things are finally looking up a bit. I’m still not at 100%, but I can eat some somewhat normal foods during the day. I’d really be curious to ask: Did anyone else go through this during pregnancy? How did you deal with it?

I’m going to try and blog a bit about some of the fun and exciting parts of this time since all I’ve been doing is sulking in between trips to the bathroom. I think it will help me to be more upbeat and focus on the raison d’être; a wonderful baby.

Hung the Wreath

By Cate on December 5, 2011 in Home

I hung the wreath from our window this year so that it would be more prominent. I’m loving boxwood and magnolia branches, so I’m pretty sure I’m going all green in terms of Christmas decorations.

How are you decorating for the Season? What themes are you going with?

Tis the season for chunky sweaters and red laces. And cuffed jeans.
